Working from home has become increasingly common, especially in the wake of the global pandemic. Many individuals have had to quickly adapt their living spaces to accommodate a home office. But what happens when your designated workspace lacks natural light and a view to the outside world? Can a windowless home office impact productivity?

The Importance of Natural Light

Natural light has a significant impact on productivity and well-being. Research shows that exposure to natural light can improve mood, reduce stress, and increase focus. Sunlight also helps 'regulate the body's circadian rhythm', which in turn can improve sleep quality and overall health.

From personal experience, working during the day time with a natural light source, gives me a boost in inspiration and energy to keep working on important tasks, regardless of how drained I feel, when comparing to completing them in windowless spaces.

The Effects of a Windowless Environment

Without access to natural light, individuals may experience symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. A lack of sunlight can also disrupt the body's internal clock, leading to sleep disturbances and decreased productivity during the day.

It's not just consistent screen time (Blue light) that provokes eye-strain and over-draft, but the lack of natural : artificial light sources that still allow your eyes to signal to the brain that it's day time. Without this balance, and you see the same light during night time, not just through out the day, your brain will never know when it's supposed to be tired. Resulting in something I like to call a 'circadian rhythm shift'.

Studies found a concerning list of proven negative affects that certain artificial light sources have on your long-term eye health, vision clarity, moods, sleep quality, and even hormonal balance.

Here's a summary of their key findings:

 1. Suppression of Melatonin Production: Blue light suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin levels naturally rise in the evening, signaling to the body it's time to sleep.

 2. Shifting of Circadian Rhythm: Exposure to blue light in the evening can delay the release of melatonin, effectively pushing back the body's internal clock. This can lead to difficulty falling asleep, delayed sleep onset, and reduced sleep duration.

 3. Increased Alertness: Blue light stimulates the brain, making it more difficult to wind down and relax before bed. This can lead to feelings of alertness and restlessness when trying to sleep.

 4. Daytime Sleepiness: Disrupted sleep due to blue light exposure can result in daytime fatigue, reduced alertness, and impaired cognitive function.

Where to find more information on this:

 - Scientific Journals: PubMed, Google Scholar, and other scientific databases contain numerous peer-reviewed studies on the effects of blue light on sleep.

 - Reputable Organizations: Organizations like the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine provide reliable information on sleep and the impact of blue light.

Strategies to Improve a Windowless Home Office

While it may not be possible to install a window in every home office, there are ways to mitigate the negative effects of a windowless environment. Consider incorporating the following strategies:

1. Use full-spectrum lighting to mimic natural light and reduce eye strain.

The Verdict

While a windowless home office can have a negative impact on productivity and well-being, there are steps you can take to create a more conducive work environment. By prioritizing natural light, incorporating greenery, and taking regular breaks, you can help mitigate the effects of a windowless workspace and boost your productivity levels.

Remember to always adapt to your surrounding and it's limitations, you're productivity health, and well-being is placed higher than look and style on the totem pole of priorities.
